A lot of us think twice before we eat something whether it is healthy or not, whether we should take it in our body or not, etc. but only a small amount of people think twice before applying something on their skin. This can be just as dangerous as taking in unhealthy or toxic food.
We should always look at the ingredients at the ingredients that are used in the products we use because there are no strict laws regarding makeup and skin care products in comparison to food. And sometimes the companies claiming to be all natural and non toxic turn out to be the opposite when you look at their ingredients in the back.
So, here are a bunch of ingredients you should look out for in your make up and skin care products.
Parabens and sodium lauryl sulfate have already been discussed in previous articles here are some additional ones:
- Parfum or Artificial Fragrance
You all would be familiar with this ingredient as almost every cosmetic and skin care products contain at least some amount of it. Companies are not responsible for mentioning what they are using as fragrance so they just put parfum at the back in the ingredients list. This could be anything which means it could be a harmful substance that is allergen, carcinogenic and what not.

They are also said to be endocrine disruptors like parabens and may cause reproductive as well as hormonal problems leading to birth defects.
- Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)
It is a known thickener used in shampoos, lotions, etc. it is often contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1, 4-Dioxane. Ethylene oxide is known to be carcinogenic while 1, 4-Dioxane causes respiratory problems and is even banned in Canada.
This ingredient is used in cosmetics and skin care product as a preservative and is also a well known carcinogenic. It is also related to asthma and toxicity.
It is often written as DEA on the labels. It has been banned by the EU in personal care products due to its carcinogenic and respiratory toxicity effect but it is still being used in America in shampoo, body wash, bubble bath etc. This is used as a foaming agent in many products.
Some other ingredients include oxybenzene and triclosan. We should avoid such contaminants as much as we can and introduce natural skin care and cosmetic products in our daily use.
